It is now the end of October. The leaves have fallen and the air a little crisp.
The electric fence has been repaired, Cochise now wears his halter at all times when outside. The mallards (the three remaining, Bill, Jill and Sally) are happy with their environment and all is well.
A couple of weeks ago, the ducks were out in the kiddie pool when I heard a gagging sound. I walked up the bank to look into the pool to see what was happening. Old Bill was jumping Jill and her body was submerged in the water. She came up for air and he started again. Naughty birds! So....I expect that I will be blessed with some eggs one of these days.... 8->
Even better! A few weeks ago, I was leaving the house when I heard a famous QUACK QUACK. I went upstairs to the picture window to look at the pond across the road. Guess what!? THREE mallards were swimming together in the pond! Oh happy days! They are ALL alive and well including Fast Eddie (or should I say "Edwina?).
A big smile came to my face as I listened to the choir of ducks happily playing in the water. I know it has to be them because they all hang together and they are the ONLY ducks that are so loud! The wild ducks that are there, I didn't know they existed because they are so quiet. The wild ones stay together in their own floating armada. My "guys" are the trouble makers in the pond.
Our neighbor said there was something in the pond that made a racket. I told her that they were my lost mallards. She smiled and said, "will they come home"? I said they are welcome home if they wish, but I wasn't going to try and capture them. We'll see when the pond freezes......and the little ingrates come begging for food and shelter.
I will be VERY happy if they do come home, however, if they only want to "visit" once in a while, well. that's OK too.
